The fashion world is an industry. Being a top model is a job.

My co-bloggers and myself may write under the same banner but we don't always agree on everything (thanks God  !).
I have read (and translated) Blondyn Bubble's post Soyons Belles en Rondeur, and I decided to react to it.

If Blondyn' point is to praise femininity in all its forms and curves, I can only agree with her. But if it is about being indignant about the fact that all the top models are thin, we may have to replace things in their context here

The basic question is why are models thin ? Actually, choosing tall and slim models allows  the garments to be seen and appreciated on the runway. Karl Lagerfeld defines the "fashion" body as such:

« Nowadays, the typical "fashion" body is an increadibly thin figure, with never-ending legs and arms, a very long neck and a very small head. A model can't have wide bones. There are things that can't be planed.  »

Lagerfeld's words may seem harsh, however they are honest and coherent with what the job of a model is. Because being a top model is a job. And this job is all about proportions. A design will be easier to appreciate on a slim body, just like sportsmen have to reach a height limit if they want to go pro.
Therefore, most of the models have the same sizes. And standard sizes were created in order to facilitate the creation of "one size fits all" fashion designs so that during the fashion shows, the designers don't have to adjust their creation to their models.

Standardization may seem like a negation of the individual but remember that the fashion industry is a business world.  Models do not represent all women and even less a fantasy. They are women who were chosen for their body and whose job consists in wearing and promoting garments on runways or photos. That is to say the exact opposite of what we do everyday.

Models use their body in order to show and highlight garments , to make them look good whereas we, the real women, use these garments to look good. So it is up to US. We need to learn how to differentiate both worlds and understand that everyone of us is its own ideal. And we need to learn how to work with our own body, what looks best on us and what doesn't.
By the way, most of the famous women we would name for their beauty and charm are curvy: Eva Longoria, Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, Nicki Minaj…
