Femininity is today's focus. But let's innovate. Let's talk about the fiercely real women. Curvy women.
"No one wants to see curvy women in fashion" according to Karl Lagerfeld. "You’ve got fat mothers with their bags of chips sitting front of the television and saying thin models are ugly" he explained to a german magazine not so long ago. And he doesn't stop there, he then says about singer Adele that she is "a little too fat but has beatufiful face and a divine voice"

This got him to be heavily criticised. But isn't he just saying what everybody is thinking ? Nowadays, a pretty woman is supposed to be slim if not skinny. If we agree or not doesn't matter, the standards were set a long time ago, and it is not the point. Of course, thin women are pretty. Of course they have dreamlike bodies. Saying otherwise would be a lie.

But I still wonder, why should we all fit into this image ? M. Lagerfeld is aware of his influence in the fashion industry. And he knows very well the influence of this industry on standards and young girl's minds. I don't deny the right of speech. I just want to point my finger at what kind of role model he is being.

I praise difference. A woman is beautiful whenever she feels beautiful. Very little is needed for a woman to exude an aura that won't leave anyone indifferent. Even if she's not a size zero. Even if she has love handles. Girls, feel pretty, you'll be pretty !
Standards are subject to time, they evolve. People's mindset changes throughout the eras. If you don't believe me, maybe Titian will convince you ? I mean, he is way more qualified in terms of esthetic. Look at his Urban Venus, one of his most beautiful paintings. Yeah, right there, look at her belly. But he still calls her Venus. And she still looks sensual. And she still is beautiful. Why would it be true centuries ago and not anymore today ?

Fashion is definitely the place where you can bring back old stuff into fashion. Everybody had gotten rid of their flares and now they are back into fashion. Everybody had forgotten the flashy colors of the 90's? Now we can't do without them this summer. If fashion shows the way, it should also create new standards. Standards that enables everyone of us to be themselves without having to starve to be accepted.
Some women already opened the way. You just have to look at them to see that it works. I call Tara Lynn, a famous plus size model, and our lively Marianne James. These two women probably have nothing in common except their self-confidence. They are proud of their curves. It has become their strength so much so that they do nude photo shoots.

These very photos represent femininity, or one of its facet. When we try to fit so much, we loose our originality. So let's stop this. We aren't all curvy. We aren't all thin. But that shouldn't stop us from being ourselves and accepting our differences.

If Karl Lagerfeld felt like he had to loose weight in order to feel better, we don't all have to do that. Generalizing is never a good thing. Thin girls, blond girls, curvy girls, whites girls, red-hair girls, black girls, it doesn't matter. What is important is being ourselves and accepting ourselves.
I repeat, a woman is beautiful when she feels that way. I mean it.

I very much enjoyed this post.
ReplyDeleteMust say.. though I find Karl to be a very inspirational character due to his work (he is a very workaholic and goal-focused succesful artist.. I applaude that); I've read he is a bit judgeful when it comes to fat or skinny people.. he's all about "skinny models".. like that thing he said about Adele.. who care about the way she looks.. she's amazing!.. the weight should not even be an issue! should not even be mentioned!
Sadly.. we live in a world where the looks and physical image rule... I'd love people to downsize the weight standards, to see people for who they are not how they look.. but then again, I must admit I find myself judging me all the time due to that too..I'm probably the worst and toughest critic... I'm mostly uncomfortable with my body and that shows... which does not speak good about myself. Though I don't judge other people by that, I do however judge myself.
I try to let that go but then again I feel the pressure.. besides, I'm a fashion designer, I'm around super tall and skinny models almost everyday and I look at them in magazines or online daily... how much can I take? I don't know.. but I do get tired of seeing so much of that image.. I eventually fall in that zone where I feel bad about myself.
Bottom line, we cannot all be skinny, or pretty, or tall, or genius... we gotta open our third eye and see beyond it.. how I'd love to live in a world where people fell in love with their eyes closed... (did I write too much?..sorry! :) )
I'm glad you wrote that much, because it's never too much when it comes to opinions :)Our world is ruled by rules that are difficult to fight against ... I am critic with myself too but that should be only because you don't like what you are, not because you fear the judgement of others...
DeleteAs you say, models are all the same, that's why you can feel bad when you don't enter that kind of body. Worst : sometimes you do but you don't even see it and search for more. I really don't know how we could change that feeling of "not belonging" but certainly not with phrases like the Lagerfeld one ... I dream of evolution. Maybe someday ? We are the future after all, it's our job :)

I think is about feeling good with yourself. If you feel good inside you will look great outside! No matter your weight. Karl comments made me laugh I like the he is open and honest because I know a lot of people think like him but will never say it. I respect his point of view but I don't agree 100 % but I think his comments shouldn't be taken so seriously ;) He always makes me laugh ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment :)
DeleteAs I said in the article, I agree with you, he's only saying out loud what others thinks but don't dare to say. I could respect his point of view if he was respecting the other's but he's clearly not. If Adele feels good the way she is, I don't know why he's targeting her. Anyway, he apologized to her so he might have realized that this wasn't his call...
Like you said, it's only about feeling good for yourself but frankly, people like him don't make it easy for someone who lacks confidence and is a bit shy. It's such a shame :(
