Lady Gaga, Freedom of Style

   Lady Gaga exaggerates, exasperates, annoys, abuses, transgresses and so on. If some are shocked, other make allowances. I used to be shocked by her, the « Gaga By Gaultier » reportage changed my mind. The encounter between noted french designer Jean-Paul Gaultier, and new international star Lady Gaga was more than surprinsing.

During an honest face to face, « Gaga » asserts her positions, her struggles, her weaknesses and above all, her love for fashion.

   She calls her sense of fashion avant-gardist. Obviously. Lady Gaga does innovate. Like we all do, she creates her own style which is a patchwork of sensibilities and preferences. And if the results are that extravagant, it is synonymous with freedom of speech and especially communication strategy.

   By taking a close look at her outfits, we can easily find a theme: disguise. The Lady plays with shapes and design and manages to reinvent herself whenever she makes an apearance. Of course, it is the craziest outfits that we remeber the most. She appears on stage wearing a dress sewed on with bubbles, she walks on the Brit Awards red carpet dressed as a white doll or even wears a feathered sheath collar by Jean-Paul Gaultier to make a buzz.

   The queen of communication and provocation lays the emphasis on detail. Everything counts. Everything is a symbol of something else. She uses her voice even when she doesn't sing, thanks to the image. She arrives at the Grammy Awards hidden in an egg, symbol of her new album « Born This Way ».

 The effect is striking and hundreds of photos circulate. She's not afraid of posing naked for David La Chapelle, labelled with words full of sense.

   Since Lady Gaga exposes her body and outfits so much, her game of hide and seek is all the more flagrant. Indeed, very often does she wear masks which allow her to reinvent herself, as well as her multiple haircuts. But it is also a way to hide herself behind a face that is not hers. During interviews, on stage or different appearances, Lady Gaga, plays with an eye-mask or a mask in order to increase the mystical aura built around her character.

   However, beyond those excesses, her personnal touch in fashion is noticeable. On rare occasions, when she wears simple looks, Gaga asserts a flawless sense of fashion. We also love her black leggins, her rock'n'roll attitude and her big dresses. Far from the excesses and provocation, Stefani Germanotta stays a 25 year-old woman moved by fashion and designers and who beneficiates from the ability to wear whatever she wants. Is there better opportunity for an artist who encourages everyone to be whoever they want, no matter what other people think because "we're all super stars" ?
