Recently I've been looking for new photographers. In order to find new ones I often look at other photographers Tumblr or Facebook, sometimes it happens they mention about their fellows be it in an interview or simply posing for them. This was the latter for Marie Air (whom you should already know, if not click here) who was photographed by Jean-Philippe Lebée, a photographer I really love.
Why Jean-Philippe Lebée ? When I look at Jean-Philippe images, I am just filled with warmth. He has a way to use light and to photograph people that makes his pictures look both very natural and artistic. What I love the most about his work are his pictures of people because he has the ability to reveal their true nature. Jean-Philippe is gifted to make people relaxed and so at ease that all his pictures look very intimate. And that's this very point that makes me love him even more.
What I'm seeing. I so love this picture, it is amazing. The girl's skin is beautiful, it looks like milk and she seems to be redhaired. I mention all those details because according to me they are really important here because eventhough it seems outside there is a lot of light, Jean-Philippe chose to shoot this girl with very few light. As if he wanted to avoid any light agression on the model's skin. In my opinion, he decided to do so to emphasize the lines of the girl. As you can see she is really well shaped, and above all she has infinite legs. And here lies the secret of this image : it is all about the lines.
The girl must have a beautiful face but I find Jean-Philippe choice more meaningful, because for me this picture is very feminine, I mean the lines of this girl embody femininity. It doesn't matter if a girl is thin or curvy as what make us women are our shapes, our lines. The underwear she is wearing are also recalling her lines because they are supposed to exaggerate the shape of her waist making it look thinner. These underwear looks like those 50's panties or some of the lingerie one burlesque performer would fall in love with.
The cigarette recalls me of the old black & white movies, where you have the heroine who is smoking sensually. You know these old films starring Marlene Dietrich or Lauren Bacall, this is what this cigarette and its smoke are reminding me.
This photo while having a kind of vintage touch because of what I mentioned before is also very current in my opinion. Firstly because the girl isn't styled to look like a 40's-50's icon, and secondly the decor does not remind this era. And last thing, the picture is in colour.
I like the feeling of intimacy in this picture, it is almost as if Jean-Philippe shot this girl while she was alone in this room smoking. I also really enjoy how he used light there, and speaking of it I think that the way he makes use of it is his signature.
This picture made me travel through past and present, and you, in which era did it bring you ?

gorgeous photo!
