Today, Shug'A'Very is sneaking into Project Bassline to introduce you to her favorite singer of the moment. So let her introduce you to Kimbra and her song "Settle Down" which have totally taken her away !
Absolute B. and I have different musical taste but if we have something in common is to be in love with music! Today I sneaked into her sanctuary to introduce you to Kimbra, a singer from New Zealand that I discovered when I heard her duet with Gotye "Somebody that I used to know".
The first song of hers that I listened to is "Settle Down" and let me tell you that I A-D-O-R-E it. Kimbra will make you appreciate her, smile, being surprised but above all she will make you do one thing: shake your body. This is how she put a spell on me. Enjoy !
When I clicked on this video I didn't expect to see such a great artist believe me ! Kimbra's universe is ironic, colorful and she sure knows how to make you boogie as her sense of rythm is spectacular. I really love the beginning of the song when she is only giving the tempo because it is exactly this tiny little thing that actually gives life to the piece as the music pitches on the tempo she gave. As soon as the song began I already wanted to dance, and instinctively I began to clap my hands just like her. The break at 1'01 enables you to totally get into the piece as it is there that both vocal AND instrumental parts are put together. Then the song doesn't stop progressing and this is the thing that I love the most about it: its progression. In this song Kimbra alternates very quiet moments as well as very rythmed moments (the piano also contributes a lot to make this piece more lively), in brief there is NO WAY that I can get bored by this song.
But what I loved the most in all this is the video: Kimbra is presenting us a colorful universe with a playful song that makes you want to boogie and yet she approaches a serious theme: wanting things too fast and growing up too fast. This is the explanation of the two little girls made up as women as we discover AFTER that these "women" are actually children. Let me tell that I was more than flabbergasted when I get to realise they were not women, not that I didn't see that they were extremly young but with all the make up, the decor and the clothes, I almost got fooled !!! Did you also get almost fooled like me while watching this video ?
This video with these children made up as women suddenly reminded of the last publication of the french Vogue by Carine Roitfeld in collaboration with Tom Ford, which let me puzzled because of the following photos:
Are these little girls are playing with the accesories and clothes of their mother or do these photos are to be taken seriously ? I am still wondering about it but if there is one thing I am sure is that by listening to and watching Kimbra video, I am convinced that the subject she chose in this particular song is timeless.
This song didn't only remind me of Carine Roitfeld, but it also made me think of the photographer Irina Ionesco who totally took her daughter's childhood away by eroticizing her in her photos.
Kimbra is colorful, lively, slightly retro but above all a very wise artist with an incredible sense of rythm, isn't she ?
