My Agfa Flexilette

Among everything I own, the most precious thing is probably my Agfa Flexilette camera.  When I saw it in its leather case, I fell in love with it.  I found it years ago in my father's mess. At that time, although I had no particular interest in photography, this object still managed to captivate my attention. I would spend hours just observing it. In its leather case, the Agfa looks esthetic and nice. It is an object that deserves a spot on a shelf like a decoration.

Fifteen years later, it took another dimension: since then, I discovered vintage and learnt that it was my father's first camera. He bought in 1963 after working all summer long in order to afford it. It accompanied him in his numerous trips abroad. Inside the case is written his name and his address of the time, when he was 17. There is also a sticker of Air Africa with his address 20 years later, when he had already travelled in a great part of Central Africa. Actually, my camera is precious to me but without its case, I doubt it would have the same sentimental value: the leather changed and kept a part of my father  whereas the metal of which the camera was made stayed the same.

Among all the jewels I own, the most precious own is definitely my Agfa Flexilette. I consider it as a jewel because, beyond its esthetic side given by its case, the metal and its mecanism gives it charm. In order to take a picture, I have to push a little button so that the viewfinder opens. But the picture in the viewfider is back to front ! That is why I consider it as a jewel, kind of like a little clock. The looks filled with wonder of people in the street when they see me with my camera are very eloquent about the fascination it can operate.

Of course, I don't spend my time contemplating this object. I also try to take pictures with it and I can assure you it is not the easiest thing to do ! I have all the adjustments to do. I always have to take the light into account and to figure out the right distances (which is really hard for me), think about the back to front effect in the viewfinder... Sometimes I have the composition of a photograph in my head but I can't make it happen because of a detail I didn't take into account in my adjustments.

You can have a look at some photos of mine here and here.
