When you ask a Piedmontese to name the traditional dish of the region,
the first thing he will name for sure will be the “Baci di Dama” (Ladies’
Kisses). It is a layer of tasty chocolate between two hazelnut or almond
cookies. And if I tell you that it tastes like Nutella, you should understand
how wonderful their taste is.
Those
cookies are the pride of Tortona, an italian city from the Piedmontese region.
They are a must-eat when you spend an afternoon with your friends and they
constitute an important piece of the region’s culinary influence. There is a
legend that the Baci were created at the court of Savoie in order to please the
King who wanted to discover new tastes. Others will say that they were created
in Tortona. What we are sure of is that the tradition goes back to a century
and that the fame of the Baci di Dama is still strong.
We all
should be proud of our traditions, whatever and wherever they are. They are our
parents’ and grand-parents’ legacy. That is why we should treasure them and value them
so as not to lose taste like this one and not let them go out of fashion; so
that tastes like this one continue to impress these who discover them.
Since they are quite easy to make, here is the recipe:
Blondyn
Bubble

from French by Absolute B.)
