The rythm,
the tempo, the beat ; whatever makes us want to beat time when we hear a
piece of music we like, those vibrations that penetrate at the very bottom of
our heart to reach our sensibility. This is precisely the feeling we expect
when we listen to music, whatever the genre is. In any case that is my conception
of music and also what defines my judgement regarding “good” or “bad” songs. To
me, a “good” piece comes down to a strong bass line or a good rhythm, with sometimes
a nice melody or a nice voice, but also to a solid construction. Because a song
has to tell a story and progress even if there are no lyrics.
But don’t
get me wrong! I am not saying that I have never danced on a “summer hit”. However
its name itself gives away its ephemeral nature. In French we use the word
“tube”. That word was first used with this meaning by poet Boris Vian during
the 50’s in order to designate a successful commercial song but nevertheless
meaningless and able to exist only by its form (and not its contense). What
better word then, than “tube” since it refers to a long but hollow object?
I shall
then through this column try to put the light on “pieces”, first meaning of the
term, that is to say a portion coming from a mind’s work that is strongly built
and rhythmic.
Of course,
we all have different sensibilities and musical tastes. Therefore, some people
will be more interested in such or such kind or music, may it be a piece or a
summer hit. But I believe that it is also possible to broaden our sensibilities
so as to discover and appreciate different kinds of music that are stronger and
will leave a greater mark on us than what we are accustomed to hear on the
radio. It’s all about the bass line…
An amazing piece with a perfect progression by Breakbot (french DJ)
